Bridge Closure Update

The bridge near the Old School in Horton in Ribblesdale has been temporarily closed pending replacement.

Published: 13 October 2026

The bridge near the Old School in Horton in Ribblesdale was inspected last week. North Yorkshire Council advise there is evidence of extensive rot due to the damp area which has caused a significant issue to the parapets and the beam. They took action to close the footbridge, with a view to keeping it closed until a replacement can be installed. A tender for a new bridge will go out shortly, with a view to installing the bridge in the new year. Signage is in place to advise of the closure and direct pedestrians to use Horton Bridge, just south of the footbridge. The Parish Council has requested additional diversion signage to help visitors to the area.

The new bridge will have a more resilient deck to resist the damp conditions of the location, with timber parapets to maintain the aesthetic.

North Yorkshire Council apologise for the inconvenience this will cause – they will keep the Parish Council up to date on progress for the replacement
